Our Story

Our Approach to Sustainability: Rooted in Nature, Grown with Care

At Tapua, we believe that taking care of our land and our people isn’t a corporate initiative—it is just the way we were raised in Bihar. We don’t have all the answers or claim to be perfect, but we are taking mindful steps to ensure our journey from the ponds of Mithila to your palate respects the environment and the communities that make it possible.

Here is how we are keeping things lightly sustainable, every step of the way:

A Naturally Low-Impact Crop

Makhana is inherently gentle on the earth. It grows naturally in the stagnant, shallow wetlands and ponds of Bihar, which are fed by Himalayan rivers. Because it relies on these existing aquatic ecosystems, our “Black Gold” doesn’t require the massive irrigation systems or intensive industrial farming methods associated with many other snack foods.

Sustaining Traditional Craft & Communities

For us, sustainability is about people as much as it is about the planet. Makhana harvesting is a grueling, highly specialized craft preserved by the traditional Mallah farming families. By keeping our operations close to the source and relying on the ancestral bhoojna method—roasting the seeds in clay pots over open flames—we are helping to keep a centuries-old artisanal tradition alive rather than replacing it with soulless factory automation

Mindful Packaging Steps

We know that packaging plays a huge role in environmental health. While maintaining the absolute crispness and freshness of our makhana requires careful sealing, we are actively making eco-conscious choices. We use nitrogen-flushed, resealable pouches made with eco-friendly materials wherever possible, and we are continuously exploring new ways to reduce our packaging footprint as our brand grows.

Clean, Honest Ingredients

Sustainability also means sustaining your body with real food. We keep our ingredient list simple and transparent. By choosing to roast our makhana naturally, without relying on artificial puffing agents or heavily processed additives, we ensure that what you are eating is as close to nature as possible.

We are on a continuous journey to do better for our home state and our planet, one small, crunchy batch at a time.
